Voices

VOICES is a virtual voice-mail where you can leave and share questions, thoughts, frustrations, and emotions. Things that the body cannot hold any longer and needs to release and share, in order to finish them, get rid of them or develop them.

Questions that might not have an answer.

Thoughts that I could not say.

Frustrations that I wasn’t able to share.

Emotions that I could not describe.

VOICES is a voice-mail, that enables you to experience and think in relation to someone, who might hear it. The format of this voice-mail is inspired by phenomena such as “message in a bottle”, phone voice mail, sound letters, or messages sent to outer space. VOICES is not a social network or a chatroom. We are not interested in quick communication but in slowing down, stopping to think, and listening.

The act of leaving the message is a tool for thinking and for dialogue. Leave a message only if you want to send some words into the world. It is a tool to formulate something for someone who might be listening. You can also respond to messages that have already been left. But you do not have to do this right away, because the VOICES mail will be available every Tuesday from 6:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.

The Voices event is repeated every week.

R. Barthes says: “To speak is to hope”. To leave a message is to hope that you will be heard.

How can one be in dialogue with a stranger they never met? How do you invite into dialogue someone who is not here?

VOICES is a continuation of the dance project Duets, which was created at PONEC – the dance venue. Duets created space for an encounter between people – spectators, dancers, performers. It provided a look into what human contact is and could be and it connected people from often diverse social groups in a very direct way. Voices also continues research into the creation of spaces for meeting that bridge time and space. This kind of indirect dialogue invites people to be together in a different way and create space in their thoughts for another person, to think in relation to someone. To move does not only mean to move with your body. To be in dialogue does not only mean to speak with someone.
